Winters are mild in The Woodlands area, offering us an opportunity to lower our energy bills considerably in contrast to the high costs of summer. By taking just a few extra measures to reduce heating costs even more in winter, we can put away the savings for the long cooling season ahead.
Install a Programmable Thermostat
A programmable thermostat can be scheduled to raise the temperature when the family awakes in the morning and comes home in the evening, and to lower it when the household is sleeping or away. Programmable thermostats are inexpensive and are available in several models that can be programmed according to your household schedule:
- 7-day models if your schedule changes each day
- 5+2-day models if the schedule stays the same during weekdays, and changes on the weekend
- 5+1+1-day models if the schedule stays the same during weekdays, but changes on Saturday as well as Sunday
Air Seal Your Home
Sealing cracks and crevices that let in unconditioned air and let out conditioned air is one of the best ways to lower bills. Caulk, weatherstrip and insulate around doors and windows, openings for pipes, cables and wires, around the foundation, and in the attic. Make sure insulation on the attic floor is 10 inches above the ceiling joists. Seal around recessed lighting, inside electric outlets, and around attic hatches.
Schedule Maintenance for Your Heating System
No matter what type of heating system you use, it’s important that you schedule maintenance on it at least once a year to make sure it’s running efficiently. For a furnace, you should have the heat exchanger, the burners, and the condensate drain checked. For any type of heating system, your HVAC technician should test the controls, the thermostat, and the sensors to ensure that the unit is running properly and reaching temperature set points. Change your filter regularly—a clean filter makes a difference in the efficient operation of your heating system.
