Beating Summer Allergies with Whole-House Air FiltrationWhen it comes to air pollution, there’s no place like home. This Old House

You don’t have to see them to know they’re out there: Summer allergens. But did you know they’re in your house, too? Houses are built tighter and better insulated than ever before. But according to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), the air indoors can be more polluted than Houston smog! The dust you see on furniture and curtains are a small part of what’s polluting your indoor air; dander, dust mites, mold, pollen, and smoke.

Combatting Indoor Air Pollution

Good ventilation and keeping your home clean are great ways to reduce allergens indoors. The best way is to install a whole-house filtration system. The filters can be installed in your ductwork and as long as the fan on your HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) system is running, your air is being filtered. You can breathe easy!

Types of Whole-House Air Filtration Systems

The three main types of whole-house air filtration units are:

  1. Filter-based (installed in HVAC units/air intakes)
  2. Duct-based (installed in air duct pathway)
  3. Stand-alone (installed in closets or attics; require additional air intake/exhaust)

If your home doesn’t have central air, a portable (stand-alone) air filtration unit is your best bet. Today, there are ULPA (ultra-low penetration air) filters that block 99.99% of air particles (0.12 micron). But they seem to restrict air flow and may not clean as well as HEPA (high-efficiency particulate absorber) filters.
