Schedule An Air Conditioner Tune Up - Your Wallet May Thank You!Cooling season arrives earlier in our neck of the woods than the rest of Texas, and those warm, humid days are already in evidence as spring advances. But before you turn on your air conditioner this season, schedule an air conditioner tune-up. Maintenance on your A/C not only helps ensure your equipment stays in good working order all season long, but can also save you money. Here’s how.

Boosting Efficiency

An air conditioner that is in good running order is more likely to run efficiently than one that isn’t maintained. For instance, when your A/C is low on refrigerant, it won’t cool the home effectively, and you’ll likely be turning the thermostat down. The unit will run longer, but you still won’t be cool — and, your bills will be higher.

Another example: running the air conditioner with a dirty filter is also inefficient. The unit has to work harder to pull in return air, again, raising your utility bill beyond what it should be.

Preventing Breakdowns

A/C maintenance just makes good sense. Your technician will inspect parts and test controls to ensure the equipment is running properly. The technician should be able to discover worn parts that might break down. Replacing these parts before they fail can often prevent more expensive repairs down the line. Maintenance also helps discover problems that might lead to damage in the home. For instance, a technician should always check the condensate drain for blockage, clearing it out if necessary, so condensation drains without impediment. Otherwise, the drain might back up and flood your home.

A Maintenance Checklist

The following tasks should be on your technician’s checklist:

  • Check sensors, thermostat and controls.
  • Check electric connections, voltage and current.
  • Check condensate drain.
  • Lubricate moving parts.
  • Check refrigerant level, adding as needed.
  • Clean evaporator and condenser coils.
  • Check blower components.

Regularly check and change your air filter yourself. Change it more often if you have shedding pets or dusty conditions in your home.
