When you hire a plumber because no hot water is coming out of the kitchen sink faucet,
you need to go to the water heater, not the faucet.–Joe The Plumber
Two in-house elements that can impact your family’s health are air and water. For that reason alone, you should keep your plumbing and HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) systems operating efficiently.
Your traditional storage-tank water heater has a 10-12-year lifespan. Energy.gov says, “The lowest-priced storage water heater may be the most expensive to operate and maintain over its lifetime. While an oversized unit may be alluring, it carries a higher purchase price and increased energy costs due to higher standby energy losses.”
What are the signs of a failing water heater?
If you have an older, traditional water heater, you may be happy to get rid of it! Your new, tankless water heater is going to require much less space, use much less water, and save money on monthly energy expenses.
Three signs it’s time to upgrade your water heater include:
- Noise – Rumbling may be low, but as your water heats, the rumbling noise gets louder. The noise could be caused by your water heater working harder due to mineral buildup on the bottom and/or sides of the tank.
- Leaks – If you see water on the floor under the tank, call us as soon as possible. It may have already done significant damage if you didn’t catch it in time. Water leaks can be caused by aged or bad tank fittings, a pressure overflow pipe, metal expansions over the years,
- Rust – If your water tastes or shows signs of rust, it’s difficult to know if it’s from your water heater or your pipes. When you see rust on the tank’s exterior, it’s a good bet it’s rusty on the inside, too. Your plumbing professional can tell you the source of the problem, but the fix is often a water heater upgrade.
