What Causes Hot Spots in Homes? One member of your family wears knit hats and gloves while wrapped in a blanket to watch television. Across the room, another family member is in Hawaiian shorts with an electric fan aimed directly at his face. Sometimes your home is like that; some places are consistently too warm and other areas are chilly.

Why Do We Have Hot Spots?

Hot spots are usually a HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) system problem.

Here are four causes of hot spots in your home:

  1. Especially if you have an older home, your insulation could be the hot-spot culprit. Check for air leaks, too. You could be air conditioning your backyard.
  2. Your ducts and ductwork are the wrong size and your air conditioner can’t get enough cool air into your room(s).
  3. Your HVAC system is not the right size. If your unit is too small, it’s working overtime to keep air temperatures comfortable. This impacts your energy bills and the longevity of your HVAC system. If it’s too big, one area of your home could be getting more heat or less cool air that it needs. A replacement unit could be a long-term money-saver.
  4. Your HVAC unit needs a “zoning system.” Some HVAC systems can support as many as 8 different temperature zones in your home. You can control humidity and temperature separately for whole-house comfort.

Saving Energy Saves Money

An energy audit can reveal the cause of hot spots in your home. If your utility company does not offer free audits, check with your local HVAC professional. Bradbury Brothers Cooling, Heating & Plumbing professionals may suggest:

  • Adding an air return in the hot-spot room
  • Balancing existing ductwork
  • Changing the type of air registers to a style that offers better manual control
  • Estimating the possibility and cost of re-fabricating your HVAC ductwork
