and that was just the drinking water.

Steps on How to Choose a Water Filtration SystemThere’s no argument about the benefits of a water filtration system. It’s worth the investment! And you have many types of water filtration systems from which to choose, based on your budget and lifestyle. But with all the data and choices, you may still need step-by-step how-to-choose-a-water-filtration-system information.

Our friends at wikiHow and the NSF (originally the National Sanitation Foundation) offer these tips for finalizing your choice:

1. Find out what’s in your water.

Request a copy of your water quality report from your area’s water company. If you have a private well, consider independent water testing. Then compare your results with Standards for Water Treatment Systems.

FYI:

  • The contaminants in your water may depend on your home’s construction/location.
  • Visible particles in your water can be rust or sediment, and houses that rely on wells often have bacteria in the water.
  • You may discover you do not need a water filter at all because your water contains no contaminants.

2. Not all filters can remove all contaminants.

Decide what contaminants you want to eliminate and which ones you want to reduce.

3. Learn about POE (point-of-entry) and POU (point-of-use) water filters.

Those are the two types of water filtration systems. POUs are installed on shower heads or spigots. POEs connect to a storage tank or where your water enters the house.

FYI:

  • Consider talking to a Certified Water Treatment Professional.
  • If the contaminates in your water are toxic, you probably want a POE filter to clean incoming water.
  • If you are only filtering the water for taste, a POU filter on the faucet will suffice.
