Coming home from work to find an inch of water throughout your house is a pretty extreme scenario that lets you know it’s time to call a plumber. In the majority of cases, you’ll have a bit more warning before disaster occurs. However, so you don’t have to deal with the hassle of an in-home flood, it’s essential to know some of the signs that it’s time to call a plumber.
Clear Signs it’s Time to Call a Plumber
There are some tell-tale signs it’s time to call a plumber. However, one rule of thumb to live by is: If something changes—water pressure, water color, plumbing noises—then call. Other than that, you can look for these five things as well:
- Visible water – If water starts pooling near a sink, toilet, or water heater, it’s time to call your plumber. It’s helpful to have a professional locate where it’s coming from, and fix the issue.
- Dripping faucets – It may not seem like a big deal, but how much does that dripping water add up to over time? It may be surprising (and alarming) to realize, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, a leak that’s one drip per second can waste up to 3,000 gallons of usable water per year. Not to mention how much that could be costing you!
- The sound of water – If you aren’t running a faucet, you shouldn’t be hearing the soothing sound of rushing water. If you are, get on the phone and call your plumber right away.
- Chronic clogged drains – Sure, it may be that clump of hair, but how frequently are your drains getting clogged? Clogs and slow drainage happen for more than one reason. Those reasons can cost you more in the long run if you don’t handle it sooner than later.
- Unheated water – Is your water cooling down? Before you resort to taking cold showers, call the plumber.
