Don't Ignore Water Pressure ProblemsIf you’ve noticed water pressure problems, then you need to act before your water goes from a stream to a trickle, an even greater problem. Low water pressure can be caused by a variety of things. Common causes of water pressure problems include:

  • Corrosion inside pipes
  • Leaks
  • Mineral build-up in pipes
  • Municipal water problems

What to Do

If you’re on a city line, ask your nearby neighbors if they are also having water pressure problems. If they aren’t, you need to focus on your property. Before you call your plumber you can:

  1. Check other faucets – kitchen, bathroom, outside – to determine if your water pressure problem is throughout the house or contained to one or two areas. Run cold water, then hot water. If your water pressure is lower only when you run hot water, the problem may be the water heater.
  2. If you have low water pressure in one or two areas rather than throughout the house, you may have a clogged faucet. You can DIY (do-it-yourself); unscrew the faucet end and check for build-up or other debris. If the faucet tip or aerator has mineral deposits, try soaking it in a vinegar solution and scrubbing it with a cleaning brush (a toothbrush works well). Before you replace the faucet end, turn on the water to see if it flows normally. If it doesn’t, then your problem is elsewhere.
  3. Look for leaks. Water on the floor around the toilet, under the kitchen sink, or signs of moisture in any spot that should be dry is an indicator you may have a hidden water leak. It’s time to call your plumber.
