With the climate of The Woodlands, you may find yourself relying on your home HVAC system through most of the year. But many people don’t know what’s behind the acronym – what the parts of the HVAC system are. Here’s a brief introduction:
H is for Heating
There’s a wide variety of heating systems on the market, from traditional gas or propane furnaces to high-efficiency air-source and geothermal heat pumps or the rarer radiant floorboard heat. While furnaces remain the most common heating systems nationwide, homeowners in southern states such as Texas have increasingly been enjoying the high efficiencies of heat pumps. (Heat pumps perform less efficiently as the temperature drops below freezing, making them less desirable to homeowners in colder northern climates.)
In most cases, your heating system draws air in from your home, heats it, and circulates it back out again. Furnaces burn fuel to produce heat, whereas heat pumps transfer heat energy from the outside into your indoor air.
V is for Ventilation
Proper ventilation is one of the most important parts of the HVAC system. Your home’s ductwork circulates air throughout the house, bringing it to every living area connected to the vent system. If your home is well-sealed to prevent energy loss, ventilation systems may be necessary to bring in fresh air and improve air quality. Air filters, air cleaners, humidifiers and dehumidifiers also rely on the ventilation system to produce healthy indoor air.
AC is for Air Conditioning
Of supreme importance in the Woodlands area, air conditioners work by pulling the heat out of indoor air and exhausting it outside. Because cooler air can hold less humidity than warm air, your air conditioner also works as a dehumidifier through the humid summer months.
