Following the 2010 earthquake tragedy in Haiti, Florida plumber Fred Schilling volunteered to travel to the impoverished island to repair broken water mains. Before his trip, he confidently said to a Huffington Post reporter “It shouldn’t be too complex.”
What he discovered was a complexity he couldn’t have anticipated: There were hardly any water mains to “fix”; in fact, the water sanitation and sewage issues were so dire, he had to refocus his mission.
Water contamination is the leading cause of infant mortality in Haiti, where childhood illnesses and cholera prevail. Almost half the population use open defecation to eliminate bodily wastes. “I had no concept as to how undeveloped Haiti was . . . that basically, it had no plumbing. We had to rethink this.” He joined forces with a Seattle plumber to develop the nonprofit organization Plumbers Without Borders.
